27th May 2011, Majenta PLM, Europe’s foremost Siemens Industry Software business partner, recently implemented NX design software at leading super-yacht design company, John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs. The software has just played the leading role in the design of Adastra, described by the boating Press as ‘one of the world’s most amazing super-yachts, that could spell the future for efficient long-range cruising’. The striking 42.5m trimaran ‘Adastra’, has a maximum speed of 22.5 knots and a range of 4000 miles (6500 km) at 17 knots, and is being built at a shipyard in China for clients in Hong Kong.
Majenta supplied and integrated Siemens NX software, which was used throughout the whole yacht design process, including conceptual design, hull fairing and detailing, structural design, interior design and superstructure and deck gear design and detailing. The ability of NX to fully integrate the different phases of the design process, from conceptual design to detail drafting and to model the complex free-form surface shapes that characterise the hull as well as more prismatic engineering forms such as structural components and deck gear, were among the reasons given by Shuttleworth for initially selecting NX. In addition, they were looking for an integrated solution that could be quickly and easily implemented by a knowledgeable specialist.
“I knew that Majenta PLM had implemented well integrated design solutions elsewhere and this was something I was keen to replicate at Shuttleworth Designs in order to keep us at the cutting edge of what we do”, said Orion Shuttleworth, Designer, John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs.
The final 3D models created in NX of a complete yacht, including the hull form originally created in MacSurfPro – a popular hull-shape design tool among the yacht design community – forms an integral part of the design package issued to the ship-yard, along with a comprehensive set of 2D detail drawings. Together, these enable the yard to take measurements and sections required for the construction process and to generate CNC tool paths for cutting patterns for mould tools.The NX model is also used to generate photo-realistic visualisations of the yacht’s exterior and interior for client presentation and design review purposes during the design process.
“The use of NX has enabled us to increase the quality and detail of the design package that we offer our clients,” said Shuttleworth. “It also enables us to adapt quickly and to modify the design to accommodate the inevitable changes in direction that occur during the yacht design process. It certainly helped us during the design of Adastra”, he concluded. Ends.
