Industry-leading BIM Information Manager – Majenta Solutions – have released a paper covering the new and future ways in which BIM will add value in construction post-pandemic. The paper is based on a discussion with Gary Scott of Willmott Dixon on how Majenta’s BIM experts have supported the contractor’s work on university build projects.

Majenta Solutions have had the pleasure of working as a BIM Information Manager to help Willmott Dixon deliver state-of-the-art buildings to prestigious university clients with fully compliant asset information models at handover. With recurring staff members reuniting on successive projects across Contractor, Client and Information Manager, all teams involved have been rewarded for their efforts with new BIM learnings.

The paper includes the highlights of a discussion between James Smith (Technical Director at Majenta), Scott Pullar (Principal Consultant at Majenta), and Gary Scott (Digital Construction Manager at Willmott Dixon London and South).

It covers ongoing changes to the way that BIM is used and valued in construction – from changing client requirements to growing recognition of the range of knowledge and experience that a third-party Information Manager such as Majenta can bring to the table.

How cumulative BIM learning fuelled success on successive university build projects

Majenta take a different approach to providing BIM support, establishing long-term relationships with customers. Learnings from previous projects enable better qualification of BIM requirements from the outset. What does this look like on a real project? The following case study from our new BIM Industry Insight paper shows this approach in action.

University of Kent School of Economics – Kennedy Building

Value: £18,800,000.00 | Completed: March 2019 | Client: University of Kent

The Kennedy Building is the new three-story home of the University of Kent’s School of Economics, providing a strong visual identity for the School and boasting an array of PV solar panels. Main Contractor Willmott Dixon brought Majenta Solutions onboard to act as BIM Information Managers for this campus centrepiece.

Customer Challenge: For the creation of a new state-of-the-art economics building, it was essential that all necessary information could be provided to the facilities management (FM) team for effective building maintenance.

The Majenta Solution: Majenta worked alongside Willmott Dixon and their consultants to ensure the client deliverables were obtained and provided to the standards the university required. Majenta worked with the university to ensure they fully captured requirements for the FM teams to effectively maintain the building.

Business Impacts: the university received a fully compliant model containing all required information for the FM team. The model had an integrated digital O&M manual which could easily be updated using access databases.

Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS)

Value: Approx. £10,000,000.00 | Completed: 2020 | Client: University of Kent

Following the successful delivery of the Kennedy Building in 2019, Willmott Dixon delivered a ‘first of its kind’ multi-use building featuring a 150-seat lecture theatre, seminar rooms, IT suites, social spaces and a GP simulation suite. Majenta were brought onboard again as Information Manager, working successfully with some of the same project teams as before.

Customer Challenge: An expanding curriculum required a purpose-built space, the future maintenance of which depended on key information being accurately supplied to the FM team.

The Majenta Solution: Building on previous success, Majenta worked alongside Willmott Dixon and their consultants to ensure the client deliverables were obtained and provided in the standards and methods the university required. Majenta worked with the university to ensure that they once again captured all of the FM team’s requirements for future building maintenance.

Business Impacts: the university received a fully compliant model that contained all required information for the FM team. The model had an integrated digital O&M manual which could easily be updated using access databases.

Kingston University – ‘Town House’ Building

Value: £16,000,000.00 | Completed: 2019 | Client: Kingston University

Majenta provided BIM expertise to support Willmott Dixon’s delivery of a new university building. The ‘Town House’ is a striking six-storey presence on Penrhyn Road (London), acting as both a welcoming front door to Kingston University and an impressive physical symbol of learning and community experiences.

Customer Challenge: To provide more study space, improved layout and facilities, including lots of natural light. It was essential that all necessary information for maintenance was provided to the FM team.

The Majenta Solution: Majenta worked with Kingston University to ensure that clear information requirements were set out from the beginning for all team members and that the business goals were achievable.

Business Impacts: the university received a fully compliant model containing all required information for the FM team. The model had an integrated digital O&M manual which could easily be updated using access databases.
